Ferromagnetic gyroscopes for tests of fundamental physics

چکیده

A ferromagnetic gyroscope (FG) is a ferromagnet whose angular momentum dominated by electron spin polarization and that will precess under the action of an external torque, such as due to magnetic field. Here we model analyze FG dynamics sensitivity, focusing on practical schemes for experimental realization. In case freely floating FG, transition from libration in relatively high externally applied fields, those precession at low fields. Measurement frequency enables situ measurement field technique reduce below threshold which dominates dynamics. We note evidence gyroscopic behavior present even fields much larger than dominates. also levitated above type-I superconductor via Meissner effect, find FGs with dimensions about 100 nm observed reduced compared FG. This akin negative feedback arises distortion superconductor. Finally assess sensitivity exotic spin-dependent interactions conditions, demonstrating potential tests fundamental physics.

Ring-laser tests of fundamental physics and geophysics

HeNe ring-laser gyros are standard sensors in inertial guidance; mirror reflectances now reach 99.9999%. Present research instruments have an area of ∼ 1 m2, a passive quality factor of > 1011, and a resolution of the frequency difference of counter-rotating optical beams approaching microhertz. In the Sagnac effect, this difference is proportional to the angular velocity. Present resolution is...

Fundamental physics with LISA

LISA has the potential to make observations that probe deeply into fundamental physics. Not only will it test to exquisite precision the general relativity model for gravitational radiation, but will also test strong-field gravity and in particular the proposition that all black holes are described by the Kerr metric. More research is needed, however, on how to quantify the theoretical meaning ...
